DR. GUTZLAFF
Perhaps some reader able to do so, can contribute further notes on the subsequent fate of this institution, and its exact location at Pokfulum.
The Dr. Gutzlaff referred to was a Pomeranian missionary, who, when the trouble between China and Britain broke out, became an interpreter (like Dr. Morrison did) and accompanied Captain Elliot to Canton in 1837. He later became a magistrate in British service at Ningpo and then at Chusan, and was appointed "Chinese Secretary" at Hongkong in 1843. It is recorded that he died here in 1851, so it must have been soon after returning from Berlin. He left a fortune of £30,000.
It was said of him that "no foreigner of the age had more thoroughly identified himself with the Chinese people, their literature, religion, government, history and social and domestic habits.". In commemoration of him we have Gutzlaff Street (running from Queen's Road Central to Lyndhurst Terrace); and Gutzlaff island and lighthouse, some miles to the south-east of Shanghai, are a further memorial.
